Hey there! I am Bailee Ward, your go to Colorado elopement photographer and your new adventure bff. First off, thank you so much for stopping by! I am absolutely thrilled to introduce myself and share the story of Alpine Vows, the Colorado elopement photography company that I have poured my heart and soul into. As the owner and lead photographer, every moment I get to capture for couples like you is an incredible gift. I cannot wait to give you an inside look at what makes my approach to elopement photography in Colorado so unique and personal.
If you are reading this, you are likely considering ditching the traditional 200 person ballroom wedding for something much more “you.” Maybe that means hiking to a 12,000 foot peak at sunrise, or maybe it means a quiet ceremony by a crystalline alpine lake. Whatever your vision, Colorado provides the most stunning stage in the lower 48 states!

Becoming A Colorado Elopement Photographer

Let’s rewind to where it all began. I have been fascinated with photography for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was always exploring the great outdoors with my mother’s old camera. I spent my childhood trying to capture moments that felt special, whether it was a candid laugh or the beauty of a quiet moment in the woods. What began as a hobby eventually became a passion and then it became my full time career.
But here is the thing: I did not start out as a Colorado elopement photographer. I actually began my photography career focusing on large, traditional weddings. I spent my early years traveling around Colorado, capturing the elegance, traditions, and intricate details of big weddings. And I loved it. Truly, I did. There was nothing like witnessing a couple’s love and joy on their big day, surrounded by family and friends.
However, as an introvert, I often found myself feeling drained by the energy required for such large events. I realized I was spending more time managing logistics and “wrangling” family members than I was capturing the raw, quiet connection between the couple.
It was not until 2018, when I had the opportunity to photograph my very first Colorado elopement, that I realized I had found my true calling. I was living in Colorado, surrounded by breathtaking mountains, alpine lakes, wildflower fields, and the kind of natural beauty you cannot find just anywhere. The idea of capturing a couple’s love in such a unique, intimate setting felt like fate.
After all, I grew up in Montana, spending my days skiing, mountain biking, hiking, and camping. Elopement photography was the perfect combination of my love for capturing two people getting married and my lifelong passion for the outdoors. It clicked for me. Talk about the perfect place, with the perfect backdrop. It was in that moment that I knew this was my niche. I started working with couples who were choosing to elope rather than have a traditional wedding. I quickly realized how much more connected I felt to these intimate, adventurous weddings. Elopements are personal, raw, and filled with emotion. When you add Colorado’s stunning scenery to the mix, it is pure magic.
By the end of 2019, I made the decision to fully embrace this new direction. I officially became a Colorado elopement photographer, and Alpine Vows was born.
Why Choose Colorado for Your Elopement?

Colorado is unique for several reasons. Beyond the physical beauty of the Rocky Mountains, the state offers some of the most “couple friendly” marriage laws in the United States. I wrote a blog that dives deep into how to elope in Colorado, you can check that out here!
The Magic of Self Solemnization
One of the biggest draws for couples eloping in Colorado is the ability to self solemnize. This means you do not need an officiant or a judge to marry you. You can literally sign your own marriage license, and it is 100 percent legal. This allows for a level of privacy that most other states cannot offer. If you want to say your vows alone on a mountain top with only your photographer as a witness, you can do that. You can even have your dog “sign” the license with a paw print. Colorado is one of the few places where your wedding can truly be just about the two of you.

Diverse Landscapes
While people often think of Colorado only as “mountains,” the state offers incredible topographical diversity. You can choose from:
- High Alpine Peaks and Lakes:
Perfect for those who want that “on top of the world” feeling. - Red Rock Formations:
Locations like Garden of the Gods or Roxborough State Park offer a desert like feel with dramatic crimson towers. - Sand Dunes:
Great Sand Dunes National Park looks like the Sahara Desert dropped at the base of 13,000 foot peaks. - Lush Forests:
Deep aspen groves and evergreen forests provide a cozy, intimate woodland vibe.
When to Elope: Advice from a Colorado Elopement Photographer

Choosing your date is about more than just a number on the calendar. It is about the “vibe” of the landscape and the accessibility of the trails. Colorado has very distinct seasons that change rapidly depending on your altitude.
Seasonal Breakdown for Colorado Elopements
| Season | Best Months | Landscape Features | Accessibility |
| Summer | July to August | Wildflowers, lush green meadows, blue lakes | High altitude trails and mountain passes are fully open |
| Fall | Sept to October | Golden Aspen trees, crisp air, first dusting of snow | Most roads open through early Oct; light hiking gear needed |
| Winter | Nov to March | Snowy peaks, frozen waterfalls, cozy cabin vibes | Many high passes closed; requires snowshoes or microspikes |
| Spring | April to June | Rushing waterfalls, “mud season” in mountains, green foothills | Lower elevations are great; high peaks still melting out |

Detailed Monthly Guide for High Altitude vs. Low Elevation

It is important to remember that weather in Denver is not the same as weather in Telluride. Here is what you can expect at different elevations throughout the year. For a more in-depth guide to Colorado’s seasons, check out this blog!
- January to March:
This is the heart of winter. In Denver or Colorado Springs, it might be 50 degrees and sunny one day. Up at 10,000 feet, you will likely be in a blizzard. March is historically the snowiest month in Colorado, so be prepared for a true winter wonderland. - April and May:
This is what locals call “Mud Season.” The snow is melting, which makes the trails soft and messy. However, the waterfalls are at their peak flow. If you want to elope near a thundering fall, late May is incredible. - June:
Summer starts to arrive. The foothills are green and blooming. High mountain passes like Trail Ridge Road usually open around Memorial Day, but you might still see 10 foot snow walls on the side of the road. - July and August:
This is the “Golden Window” for high altitude hiking. If you want to reach the most remote lakes, this is your time. Just watch out for the 2:00 PM afternoon thunderstorms that roll through daily. - September:
The busiest and most beautiful month. The Aspens turn gold. It is generally the driest month, making it very predictable for photography. - October to December:
Fall fades into winter. Late October is a “secret” season where crowds are low and you might get that perfect “Fall colors with a dusting of snow” look.
The Ultimate Packing List from a Colorado Elopement Photographer

Being prepared is the difference between an epic adventure and a stressful day. I recommend using a high quality hiking pack to carry your gear, even if we are only walking a mile.
The Legal Essentials
- Marriage License: Obtained from any Colorado County Clerk.
- Black Ink Pen: Most licenses strictly require black ink for signatures.
- Government IDs: You will need these to pick up the license.
- Permits: A printed copy of your Special Use Permit if we are in a National Park.
The Adventure Gear
- Sturdy Hiking Boots: Worn in at least a month before the wedding to avoid blisters.
- Microspikes: Essential if your elopement is between October and June.
- Headlamps: For those sunrise or sunset sessions when we have to hike in the dark.
- Trekking Poles: Helpful for balance when you are wearing a heavy dress or suit.
- Clear Umbrellas: These look great in photos and keep you dry during those quick mountain showers.
Clothing and Layers
- Base Layers: Wool or moisture wicking fabrics to wear under your wedding attire.
- The “Puffy” Jacket: A warm down jacket to wear between photo sets.
- Extra Socks: In case yours get wet in a creek or snowbank.
- Hand and Toe Warmers: A lifesaver for winter or sunrise ceremonies.
Personal and “Just in Case” Items
- Touch Up Kit: Lip balm, bobby pins, a small mirror, and hairspray.
- Sunscreen and Bug Spray: The sun is much stronger at 10,000 feet.
- Snacks and Water: Think high energy items like trail mix, jerky, or chocolate.
- Celebratory Beverage: A bottle of champagne or local craft beer for a mountain top toast.

My Favorite Elopement Locations as a Colorado Elopement Photographer

When couples search for a Colorado elopement photographer, they are often looking for location inspiration. Here are some of the most iconic and hidden gems in the state.
Breckenridge and Summit County
Breckenridge is one of the most versatile elopement destinations in the state. If you want big mountain views without a ten mile hike, this is your place. Sapphire Point Overlook is a classic choice that offers panoramic views of Dillon Reservoir and the Tenmile Range. For couples who want a bit more adventure, we can head up to Hoosier Pass or Boreas Pass. These spots are incredible in the fall when the aspen trees turn a brilliant gold, and they are easily accessible for those who want to feel like they are on top of the world without the strenuous climb.
If you’re looking for an in-depth blog about how to elope in Breckenridge, this one’s for you!
Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP)
Located near Estes Park, this is one of the most famous spots in the country. It offers everything from easy walks around Sprague Lake to intense hikes up to Dream Lake or Sky Pond. Please note that RMNP requires specific wedding permits and has designated ceremony sites, so we need to plan ahead! As your Colorado elopement photographer, I can help you navigate the tricky permit system to ensure your day is legal and stress free.

San Juan Mountains (Telluride and Ouray)
If you want the most dramatic, jagged peaks in the state, the San Juans are for you. This area is known as the “Switzerland of America.” It is perfect for couples who want to rent a Jeep and drive up to high mountain basins for total seclusion. The scenery here is unlike anywhere else in the world.
Maroon Bells (Aspen)
The Maroon Bells are said to be the most photographed peaks in North America. While they are stunning, they are also very busy. I help my couples navigate the reservation system or find nearby spots in the White River National Forest that offer similar views without the heavy crowds.

Garden of the Gods (Colorado Springs)
For couples who love red rocks and easy accessibility, Garden of the Gods is a public park that allows for small elopements. It is especially beautiful at sunrise when the light hits the orange spires. It is a great option for those who want a “desert” feel while still being close to the amenities of a city.
Understanding the Costs and Your Colorado Elopement Photographer

Many couples choose eloping to save money, but it is important to understand that an elopement is still a Many couples choose eloping to change the way they spend their wedding budget. It is a common misconception that eloping is only about saving money. While it can be more cost effective, for many of my couples, it is actually about shifting the focus. You are moving your investment away from feeding two hundred people and toward creating an incredible experience for just the two of you.
It is important to remember that everyone is different. You can spend much more or much less than the numbers listed here. Your total investment is totally up to you and the specific experience you want to create.
Why Couples Choose to Elopement
- A Private Wedding Experience:
Some couples simply want the luxury of privacy. They want their vows to be a sacred moment shared only between them without the pressure of an audience. - Introvert Friendly Celebrations:
Many people do not feel comfortable standing in front of two hundred people. Eloping allows you to be your true, relaxed self without the performance of a traditional wedding. - Budget Friendly Freedom:
For some, eloping is a practical way to have a beautiful wedding without starting married life in debt. It allows you to save your money for a house down payment or a future life goal while still having an epic adventure. - The Ultimate Splurge:
When you are not paying for a massive venue and catering, you can truly splurge on yourselves. This might mean a designer gown, a private helicopter tour of the Rockies, or a five star stay at a luxury ranch in Telluride.
Regardless of your budget or your “why,” having a local Colorado elopement photographer is one of the smartest investments you can make. A local professional knows the state like the back of their hand. I ensure that your day is handled professionally and provide recommendations for local vendors and hidden spots that you simply cannot find on a standard travel blog.

Whether you want a simple, budget friendly day in the woods or a lavish mountain top celebration, I am here to help you document every moment.
Colorado Elopement Photographer Full Day Coverage: Capturing the Whole Story

I understand that elopements in Colorado are not just about the ceremony. They are about the entire experience from start to finish. That is why I offer full day coverage. Think about it this way: if you were having a traditional wedding, you would have photos of you getting ready, the ceremony, the cocktail hour, and the reception. Why should your elopement be any different?
A full day elopement story might look like this:
- Morning: Making coffee together at a cozy A frame cabin in the woods while you read letters from your parents.
- Mid Day: Hiking to a hidden alpine lake, stopping to take photos of the wildlife and scenery along the way.
- Afternoon: Getting changed into your wedding attire behind a group of trees and having a “first look” by the water.
- Ceremony: Exchanging vows and signing your license on a granite slab overlooking the valley.
- Evening: Toasting with champagne and watching the sunset before hiking back down by headlamp for a private dinner.
This is a complete story. When you look back at your photos in twenty years, I want you to remember the entire day, not just the twenty minutes you spent saying your vows.
Frequently Asked Questions I get as a Colorado Elopement Photographer

Do we need a permit to elope on public land?
Yes and no. It really depends on where you want to have your elopement. Some places require a permit, such as a National Park, but others do not. As your Colorado elopement photographer, I help you identify which permits you need and how to apply for them.
Can we bring our dog?
Colorado is incredibly dog friendly! Since you can self solemnize, your dog can even “witness” your marriage. However, keep in mind that many National Parks have strict rules about where dogs can go. If your pup is a must have, I can suggest many beautiful National Forest locations where they are welcome on the trails.
What should we wear?
The key to a Colorado elopement is layers. Even in the summer, the temperature at the top of a mountain can be 20 degrees cooler than in the valley. I recommend “adventure ready” wedding attire. For brides, that means dresses with movement and maybe some thermal leggings underneath. For everyone, it means sturdy hiking boots! We can always carry your “fancy” shoes in a backpack for the ceremony itself.
