Early morning is the best time to be here before the trails get busy, and sunrise at Chautauqua is something we never get tired of. A permit is required for ceremonies through the City of Boulder.

Brainard Lake Recreation Area

About 45 minutes from Boulder, Brainard Lake is one of our most-booked locations and for good reason. Sitting at 10,500 feet in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, it gives you that high-alpine scenery without a strenuous hike. Lake Isabelle and Long Lake are both short walks from the trailhead with jaw-dropping mountain backdrops. The whole area feels tucked away and peaceful in a way that makes your ceremony feel genuinely private even when other hikers are around. A ceremony permit is required for the wilderness area and we help all of our couples get that handled.

Indian Peaks Wilderness

If you want to go deeper into the mountains, the Indian Peaks Wilderness has some of the most stunning backcountry terrain in Colorado. We’re talking crystal clear alpine lakes, granite peaks, wildflower-covered meadows that peak in mid-July, and a feeling of genuine remoteness that’s hard to find anywhere else this close to a city. Boulder Elopement Logistics: What You Need to Know

Marriage license:
You can get your Colorado marriage license from any County Clerk and Recorder’s office in the state. The Boulder County Clerk’s office works great. It’s valid for 35 days, costs around $30 to $35, and both partners need to appear in person with a valid ID.

Self-solemnization:
Colorado is one of the only states that allows self-solemnization, meaning you can legally marry yourselves with no officiant required. You sign your own license as your own witnesses. It’s a beautiful, intimate option and one we love helping couples with.

Permits:
All three of the locations above require some kind of permit for ceremonies. We start the permit conversation with every couple early so nothing gets missed.

Altitude:
Brainard Lake and the Indian Peaks sit above 10,000 feet. If you’re coming from sea level, plan to spend at least a night in Colorado before your elopement day so your body has time to adjust.

Timing:
For summer elopements at elevation, we almost always recommend starting at sunrise to beat the afternoon thunderstorms that roll through the mountains like clockwork in July and August. Fall is more forgiving and honestly our favorite season up here.
