When it comes to tying the knot, the location can make all the difference. For couples looking to escape the traditional wedding scene and create an intimate, unforgettable experience, eloping at Lake Isabelle in Boulder, Colorado, is a dream come true. With its stunning natural beauty and serene atmosphere, this hidden gem offers the perfect backdrop for your adventurous Colorado elopement!

This was absolutely the case for Abigail and Kyle. When I asked them to share their elopement vision with me they said they pictured just the two of them on a sunrise hike together, ending at an alpine lake in the mountains, having a moment for the two of them and then heading back down to meet their families for a ceremony. Lake Isabelle was the perfect place for their elopement!

Why Choose to Elope at Lake Isabelle?

Nestled in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, Lake Isabelle is a picturesque alpine lake surrounded by rugged mountains, wildflower-filled meadows, and the tranquil sounds of nature. Its breathtaking scenery changes with the seasons, but in the summer months (July – August), the wildflowers in the area are in full bloom, making it an idyllic spot for a romantic elopement surrounded by every color of the rainbow.

The thing that I love most about the Brainard Lake Recreation Area is that it has something for everyone at every skill level. There is an alpine lake that you can just walk up to that requires no hiking, there are trails for a multi-day backpacking trip, and everything in between. No matter what your skill level is, there is something for everyone!

One question we get a lot is, “do we need to hike for our elopement?” and we always say absolutely not!! There are so many incredible elopement locations all over Colorado that require no hiking and have incredible views. Get in touch with us and let us help you find the perfect Colorado elopement location!

The Beauty of Sunrise

There’s something magical about sunrise. The world awakens slowly, painting the sky with hues of orange, pink, and purple. At Lake Isabelle, the soft morning light dances on the surface of the water, creating a shimmering reflection of the surrounding peaks. This tranquil atmosphere sets the stage for a deeply personal and intimate moment as you exchange vows.

For Kyle and Abigail’s elopement, Colorado decided to get a little moody. We had gorgeous, moody morning clouds that made for some pretty epic photos!

Planning Your Elopement at Lake Isabelle

Best Time to Visit

July – September are the best months to elope at Lake Isabelle. The weather is typically warm and pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit. The wildflowers are in full bloom in the summertime, adding splashes of color to the landscape. The fall colors pop out against the rocky mountains in September. Additionally, the choosing to elope at Lake Isabelle during these months means that the trails are generally accessible, making it easier to reach the lake for your special day.

Getting There

Lake Isabelle is about a 45-minute drive from Boulder. The access road takes you through scenic forests and rocky outcroppings, heightening the anticipation of your elopement. To reach the lake, you’ll hike approximately 2.5 miles along the Isabelle Glacier Trail, which offers stunning views and a sense of adventure. Plan to arrive early in the morning to catch the sunrise, which typically occurs around 6:00 AM in August. This means setting out on your hike well before dawn, but the reward is worth the effort for your elopement at Lake Isabelle!

Permits and Regulations

Before you head out, it’s essential to check the regulations for eloping in the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area. While permits for weddings are not typically required, it’s always a good idea to verify current rules and guidelines to ensure a smooth experience. Leave No Trace principles are especially important in this pristine environment, so plan to pack out everything you bring in.

What is Leave No Trace? This is a great question! Leave No Trace is a set of principles designed to promote responsible outdoor recreation and minimize human impact on the environment. The goal is to preserve natural areas for future generations by encouraging individuals to act in ways that protect the land and its ecosystems. Here are the seven core principles:

  1. Plan Ahead and Prepare: Research your destination, know the regulations, and pack the right gear to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
  2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces: Stick to established trails and campsites to minimize damage to vegetation and soil. Avoid creating new paths.
  3. Dispose of Waste Properly: Pack out what you pack in. This includes trash, leftover food, and personal items. Use established restroom facilities when available.
  4. Leave What You Find: Preserve the environment by not removing natural or cultural items, such as rocks, plants, or historical artifacts.
  5. Minimize Campfire Impact: Use a stove for cooking instead of making a fire. If fires are allowed, keep them small and use established fire rings.
  6. Respect Wildlife: Observe animals from a distance, avoid feeding them, and never disturb their natural habitats.
  7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors: Keep noise levels down, yield the trail to others, and maintain a friendly demeanor to enhance everyone’s experience in nature.

By following these principles, outdoor enthusiasts can help protect the environment and ensure that natural spaces remain beautiful and accessible for years to come. You can read more about Leave No Trace here.

Brainard Lake Timed Entry Reservation System

The Brainard Lake Recreation Area in Colorado has implemented a timed entry system to help manage visitor access and preserve the area’s natural beauty. This system is designed to limit the number of vehicles allowed in the area at any given time, which helps reduce congestion, minimize environmental impact, and enhance the overall visitor experience.

Here are some key points about the timed entry system:

  1. Reservation Requirements: Visitors need to make a reservation online in advance to secure their entry. This helps manage the flow of visitors, especially during peak seasons. You can obtain your Brainard Lake Recreation Area Timed Entry Reservation here.
  2. Time Slots: Reservations are usually divided into specific time slots, allowing a certain number of vehicles to enter during each period. This staggered entry helps prevent overcrowding.
  3. Fees: It costs $16 for a timed entry per vehicle.
  4. Accessibility: The system aims to balance accessibility for visitors while protecting the natural environment. Limiting the number of visitors can help maintain the area’s trails, wildlife, and ecosystems.
  5. Visitor Experience: By reducing crowding, the timed entry system enhances the visitor experience, allowing for a more peaceful and enjoyable time in nature. Though we can never promise complete privacy, opting for a weekday sunrise elopement at Lake Isabelle will help with crowd sizes.

The Elopement Ceremony at Lake Isabelle

Writing Your Vows

Eloping at Lake Isabelle allows for a personal and unique ceremony. Writing your own vows allows you to express your love and commitment in your own words. This can make the moment even more special and meaningful. Take a moment to reflect on your relationship and the journey that brought you to this breathtaking location.

We highly recommend writing down vows on a piece of paper or in a vow book as opposed to reading them from your phone. In our experience, this has created a more intimate and personal ceremony experience that allows you to truly be in the moment.

Setting the Scene

While decorations, chairs, arches, etc. are not allowed for a wedding in the Brainard Lake Recreation Area, there are still a lot of ways that you can make your elopement unique and special. You can incorporate elements into your ceremony that represent your relationship, such as a favorite book passage or song, to create a meaningful atmosphere.

Capturing the Moment

Hiring a photographer who specializes in elopements *cough cough oh hey that’s me!* can ensure that you have beautiful memories to look back on. As an experienced Colorado elopement photographer, I know the best spots and angles to capture the stunning scenery and the intimate moments of your ceremony. Not to mention, Lake Isabelle is literally my favorite place in all of Colorado, so I know it inside and out!

The Experience: What to Expect When You Choose to Elope at Lake Isabelle

The Hike to Lake Isabelle

As you embark on the hike to Lake Isabelle, the excitement builds with every step. The trail winds through forests of aspen and pine, with occasional views of the towering peaks. As the sun begins to rise, the world transforms before your eyes. The chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves create a serene soundtrack, adding to the romantic atmosphere.

Once you arrive at the lake, take a moment to soak in the view. The crystal-clear waters reflect the mountains, and the gentle lapping of the waves creates a calming ambiance. This is the perfect spot to exchange vows and celebrate your love.

The Ceremony

Standing by the water’s edge, with the first light of day illuminating your faces, you’ll feel the magic of the moment. Whether you choose a traditional ceremony or something more casual, the love you share will shine brightly against the stunning backdrop. The cool morning air may prompt you to hold each other a little tighter, creating a warm and intimate connection.

Post-Ceremony Celebration

After the ceremony, you’ll definitely want to take time to enjoy the tranquility of Lake Isabelle. A lot of couples choose to bring a picnic so they can while bask in the beauty of the moment while enjoying a nice breakfast after an early morning hike.

Exploring the Area

Hiking and Nature

Once the excitement of your elopement settles, consider exploring the surrounding area. There are numerous hiking trails in the Indian Peaks Wilderness that offer stunning views and opportunities for wildlife spotting. Whether you choose a leisurely walk around the lake or a more challenging hike, the landscape is sure to leave you in awe.

Local Attractions

If you’re looking to extend your stay, Boulder offers a variety of attractions, from charming shops to delicious eateries. Consider visiting the Pearl Street Mall, where you can enjoy street performances and local crafts, or take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful Boulder Creek Path. A romantic dinner at one of Boulder’s many farm-to-table restaurants can provide the perfect way to celebrate your new marriage. One of the services that we offer couples who book with us is a local vendor referral guide, this includes everything that you need to make your elopement as incredible as possible!

Practical Considerations

Accommodations

While Lake Isabelle offers a stunning backdrop for your elopement, consider booking a cozy cabin or a charming bed and breakfast for your stay in Boulder or Estes Park. This will give you a comfortable base from which to explore the area and unwind after your adventure.

Weather Preparedness

Even in the summer months, weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. Be prepared for varying temperatures and sudden changes by layering your clothing. Bring along a lightweight jacket and consider waterproof options in case of unexpected rain. I wrote this blog all about what to pack for your summer elopement.

Leave No Trace

As stewards of the beautiful landscapes we cherish, it’s crucial to follow Leave No Trace principles. Respect the natural environment by minimizing your impact and ensuring you leave the area as you found it. This not only preserves the beauty of Lake Isabelle for future visitors but also reflects your love for the outdoors.

Abigail and Kyle’s Elopement Experience at Lake Isabelle

Kyle, Abigail, and I met bright and early at 3:50 AM to start our sunrise hike to Lake Isabelle. The morning was still and the birds were quiet. One of my favorite things about a sunrise hiking elopement is being awake before any other creature. It allows you to be fully immersed in the hiking experience. One of my other favorite things about a sunrise elopement at Lake Isabelle is watching as our couples stand in awe at the mountains as the early morning light peeks over the horizon.

After we crossed streams and meandered through fields of wildflowers, we arrived at Lake Isabelle. Kyle and Abigail changed into their wedding attire and shared an incredibly heartfelt first look. As the sun rose and the clouds moved in, we were met with a moody, cloudy morning which was absolutely gorgeous! The photos were some of my favorite I’ve ever taken there.

After their sunrise hike and photos at Lake Isabelle, we headed back down the mountain to meet their families for an intimate mountain ceremony.

Surrounded by their families, Kyle and Abigail exchanged tender and heartfelt vows and shared their first kiss as a newlywed couple! Their wedding is one I will never forget! PS: Is there anything more badass than a couple hiking in their wedding clothes?!
