When Jane and Andy (Jandy, respectively) reached out to me about their elopement two years ago they shared their vision for their elopement day. They said that they wanted to exchange private vows on the saddle of Mount Sneffels at sunrise with their dog Dayla as their witness. Boy, oh boy, was this Mount Sneffels, Telluride, Colorado sunrise elopement one for the books!
Why Choose Mount Sneffels For Your Elopement?
Excellent question! Mount Sneffels is one of Colorado’s fifty-two (or fifty-four, depending on who you’re talking to) 14ers. 14ers are mountains in Colorado that go above 14,000 ft in elevation. Having done five myself, and Jake 22, we can say without a shadow of a doubt that they are equal parts strenuous and rewarding!
Mount Sneffels towers at 14,150 feet. It is not just a peak; it’s an icon of rugged beauty and wild romance. Its dramatic ridges and rocky spires make it a favorite among mountaineers, but its allure extends beyond the thrill-seekers to those who dream of exchanging vows surrounded by nature’s splendor.
Eloping here means you’re choosing more than just a location—you’re selecting a narrative for your love story. The peak is named after Sneffels, an Icelandic word meaning “smoking mountain,” and it’s easy to see why. The way it stands sentinel over the landscape, commanding attention and reverence, makes it a perfect metaphor for the strength and majesty of a couple’s bond.
Jandy chose the saddle of Mount Sneffels for their Colorado elopement because they had once attempted it before early in their relationship, but because of bad weather they had to turn around. When choosing their elopement location, they knew they wanted to conquer this beast on their wedding day, which also happened to be their eight year anniversary!
Is Mount Sneffels Challenging?
YES! Mount Sneffels is a very strenuous hike. This was definitely the most physically demanding, yet rewarding, elopement I have done to date. It is certainly not for the faint of heart and requires top notch physicality. All in all, we hiked about 10 miles total of very strenuous trail. If a strenuous hike is not your thing, no worries at all! There are dozens and dozens of GORGEOUS locations all over Colorado that do not require a big hike, some don’t require any hiking at all! Jane and Andy’s Mount Sneffels, Telluride, Colorado Elopement
Jane, Andy, and I wake up at 1 AM and the adventure begins. We make our way up the windy dirt road with Andy at the wheel, Jane in the passenger seat, and Dayla and cozied up in the back, peering out of the back seat windows into the dark forest. When we reach our destination at 2 AM, we hop out of the truck and peer upwards towards towards the night sky, in complete awe by the billions of stars we can see now that we are away from city lights.
We grab our backpacks and snacks, lace up our hiking boots, turn on our headlamps, and head up the mountain towards Mount Sneffels. Though we hiked roughly five miles over a couple of hours, the time seemed to slip by us as we enjoyed our early morning conversation. Jane, Andy, and Dayla were the perfect hiking buddies! There was not a dull moment as we swapped life stories. When we made our final push to the saddle of Mount Sneffels where they wanted to have their elopement, the sun night sky suddenly brightened a bit and we were able to see the beauty unfold around us.
Jane made some touch-ups before putting her dress on as Andy changed into his wedding attire. As the sun rose, they shared a first look.
Sunrise Portraits
After their first look, we jumped right into sunrise portraits. The pink and orange alpenglow on the mountains was the most gorgeous alpenglow I think I’ve ever seen! I mean, these pictures just speak for themselves. Talk about the most beautiful sunrise! Plus, the bright turquoise water from the Blue Lakes below…just chef’s kiss.
The Ceremony
After Jandy’s first look and sunrise portraits, they exchanged heartfelt and emotional vows and sealed their wedding with their first kiss as husband and wife. There is something so incredibly special about standing at 13,500 ft and something even more special about professing your love to your best friend at sunrise, surrounded only by Colorado’s jagged mountain peaks. It truly felt like we were on top of the world.
Following a tearful hug and celebration after their vow exchange, it was Dayla’s time to shine! This was the moment she was waiting for…her paw print as their witness on their marriage license! Is there anything cuter than your sweet little fur baby’s paw print signature on your marriage license?! It might be one of my favorite things that couples incorporate during their Colorado elopement. Wanna know more about your dog signing your marriage license? This blog is for you!
Post-Ceremony Picnic
The elopement adventure continued on after their sunrise ceremony! They strapped on their “Just Married” signs on their backpacks and we hiked down the other side towards Upper Blue Lake. We found a nice spot along the trail and plopped down for a picnic. Surrounded by the most insane amount of wildflowers I’ve ever seen, we enjoyed a charcuterie board made by Jane!
First Dance and Portraits
On our way back to the car, we stopped by Wrights Lake so Andy and Jane could have a first dance and we could take advantage of the beautiful weather for additional portraits. One of my favorite things about Colorado is just how small you feel compared the the massive mountains and it is especially apparent when you’re standing next to a 14er. Safe to say that Dayla was pretty tuckered out and decided to take a little snooze in the wildflowers as her mom and dad frolicked in the field. Talk about the perfect end to a perfect day!
Mount Sneffels Elopement After Party
Jane and Andy chose to have a wedding weekend celebration! Combing the best of both worlds: a super adventurous elopement for just the two of them and a wedding reception a couple of days later to celebrate their love. Win win! They had their families and friends join them at Top of the Pines in Telluride where they camped, sang, danced, and ate the most delicious food.
Here are some other post-elopement celebration ideas:

Or try The Chop House for a hearty steak and cozy ambiance.

There are also tons and tons of hikes, off-roading opportunities, and fun activities like the Via Ferrata.
Planning Your Mount Sneffels, Telluride, Colorado Elopement: The Essentials
- Choosing the Right Time: Timing is everything when planning an elopement on Mount Sneffels. Summer (think mid-July and August) and early fall are ideal, offering relatively stable weather and access to the trailheads. Snow can linger into late spring or come early in the fall, which can make the trek challenging. However, the summer months also bring the risk of afternoon thunderstorms, so early morning starts are advisable.
- Be Prepared: This hike is very strenuous. You will want to make sure that you are physically prepared for this hike. The weather can also be quite unpredictable, even on the hottest of summer days it will still be cold at these high elevations. You will want to bring leggings, a coat, and maybe even some gloves or hand warmers.
- Planning the Hike: The approach to Mount Sneffels is a journey in itself. The most common route is the Sneffels Trail, which begins at the Yankee Boy Basin. This trail offers stunning vistas and a manageable climb, making it suitable for a morning hike before your ceremony. The trailhead is approximately a 30-minute drive from Telluride, and the hike to the summit can take around 4-6 hours, depending on your pace.Remember, the trail to the summit is strenuous. If you’re not an experienced hiker, consider a shorter, more accessible spot for your ceremony, such as a scenic overlook along the trail or a picturesque meadow below the peak.
- Weather Considerations: Weather on the mountain can be unpredictable. Even in summer, temperatures can drop quickly, and conditions can change rapidly. Make sure to pack layers, including warm clothing, rain gear, and sun protection.
- Photography and Memories: Capturing the magic of your elopement requires a bit of planning. If you’re hiring a photographer, ensure they are familiar with mountain photography and can handle the conditions. Alternatively, consider a local photographer who specializes in adventure sessions—someone who knows the area and can navigate its challenges effectively. Oh hey, that’s us! Reach out to us today and we’ll capture all of the elopement memories for you!

As you reach your chosen spot—whether it’s the summit or a scenic overlook—you’ll be greeted by a view that’s nothing short of spectacular. The rugged peaks of the San Juan Mountains rise around you, their snow-capped summits reflecting the first light of day. The valley below is a patchwork of vibrant wildflowers and rolling meadows, a testament to the wild beauty of Colorado.
