Sunrise Amphitheater is the spot for couples who want a real ceremony setup without the price tag of a real wedding venue. Stone risers built into the hillside, a natural stage with sweeping views over downtown Boulder, and historic stonework that has been hosting weddings for nearly a century. You drive right up to it.
It is hands down one of the best small-wedding spots in the Boulder area. Easy access for guests, real seating, room for up to 100 people, and a view that delivers whether you go for sunrise alpenglow on the Flatirons or sunset over the city lights below.
Sunrise Amphitheater is the spot for couples who want a real wedding feel without a real wedding venue. Twenty minutes up Flagstaff Mountain from downtown Boulder, you pull into a historic stone amphitheater carved into the hillside that has been hosting ceremonies since 1923. Stone risers as your seating, a natural stage as your altar, and sweeping views over the city below.
The best part is the structure. The risers seat up to 100 people, the stage is built in, and the whole setup is wheelchair accessible. Just reserve the venue through OSMP, drive right up, and get married with Boulder spread out below you. Sunrise or sunset here is the unfair advantage.

Sunrise Amphitheater is the spot for couples who want a real wedding feel without a real wedding venue budget. Not in a "we're cutting corners" kind of way. In a "we want stone risers, mountain views, and a built-in ceremony setup for under five hundred bucks" kind of way. Twenty minutes from downtown Boulder, you drive right up Flagstaff Mountain and pull into a venue that has been hosting ceremonies since 1923.
What makes it work is that it does so much for you already. The stone risers are the seating. The natural stage faces out toward the views. There is nothing to set up, nothing to rent, nothing to break down. Bring a bouquet, bring your people, and the venue handles the rest. For couples who want the small-wedding feeling without the small-wedding logistics, it is unmatched.
Sunrise Amphitheater is exactly what it sounds like. Curved stone risers carved into the hillside, a natural stage area at the bottom, and sweeping eastward views beyond. It was built in 1923 as a Civilian Conservation Corps project and has been hosting Boulder ceremonies ever since.
The whole setup is essentially turn-key. You can bring chairs and decor if you want, but most couples do not need to. The structure is doing the heavy lifting.
Sunrise has more of a real venue feel than almost any other natural ceremony spot in the Boulder area. The bones are all there.
✓ Built-in stone risers comfortably seat 100 people
✓ Natural stage area for ceremony setup
✓ Wheelchair accessible to risers, with stage accommodations on request
✓ Drive-up access, paved roads, real parking lot nearby
✓Chairs, arch, and decor allowed within OSMP rules
Because Sunrise is a reservable OSMP facility, there are real rules to plan around. None of them are deal-breakers, but they add up if you are not prepared.
✓ Only open May 1 to October 30 (Flagstaff Road closes in winter)
✓ OSMP reservation required, books out fast for peak dates
✓ Parking is paid and first-come, not guaranteed with your reservation
✓ No glass, no open flames, no rice or petals, no live amplified music
✓ Daytime hikers and tourists can be around outside your reserved window
Peak season. Long daylight, reliable weather, and the most flexibility on ceremony times. This is also when reservations book out the fastest, so put your date on the calendar months ahead if you have your heart set on a summer weekend.
Genuinely one of the best months at Windy Point. The lake reflects the fall color, the air cools down, and the crowds thin out. An underrated choice that I always recommend to couples with flexibility.
The season just kicks off May 1. Spring weather in Colorado is unpredictable at this elevation, so build in flexibility. When the weather cooperates, May at Sunrise is gorgeous and the venue is way easier to book than summer.
Closed. Flagstaff Summit Road shuts down to vehicles for the winter season and Sunrise Amphitheater is not reservable from October 31 through April 30. If you want a Boulder ceremony in winter, Chautauqua is your move.

This is one of the easiest ceremony spots in the area to access logistically. The amphitheater sits at 6,872 feet on Flagstaff Mountain, with paved road all the way up and a parking lot right next to the venue. Wheelchair accessible down to the stone risers, with additional accommodations available to the stage area on request through OSMP.
The catch is parking. Spots directly in front of the amphitheater are limited, and overflow parking is a short walk down the road. Carpooling is genuinely the move here, especially for larger groups. The parking permit situation is also a thing (more on that below).
easy

strenuous
From Boulder
About 20 to 25 minutes from downtown Boulder, up the winding Flagstaff Road. The drive itself is part of the experience, with several pullouts and viewpoints along the way that work well for couple portraits before or after the ceremony.
Capacity
Up to 100 people across the Flagstaff Summit facilities (Sunrise, Stone Shelter, and Wood Shelter combined). Your reservation availability already reflects this combined limit.
Accessibility
The path down to the stone risers and seating area is wheelchair and stroller accessible. Additional accommodations to the stage area can be arranged through OSMP on request. One of the more accessible ceremony spots in the Boulder foothills.
Parking
Limited spots directly at the amphitheater, plus overflow parking a short walk away. Parking is NOT included with your reservation and is first-come, first-serve. Non-Boulder County plates need to display a $5 daily parking permit available at self-service stations.
Reserving Sunrise Amphitheater is one of the more straightforward ceremony permit processes in the area. You'll book directly through the Boulder OSMP website by selecting Sunrise Amphitheater from their shelter rentals, picking your date and time block, providing your guest count, and paying the fee. That's it.
Book as far in advance as you can, especially for summer Saturdays and fall sunset windows. Popular dates fill up months ahead, and the calendar opens 12 months out.
✓ Reservation required through Boulder OSMP. Book at boulderparks-rec.org or call OSMP directly.
✓ Available May 1 through October 30. Closed the rest of the year.
✓ Reservation does not include parking. Non-Boulder County vehicles need a $5 daily permit.
✓ Up to 100 guests across the Flagstaff Summit facilities combined.
✓ No glass containers anywhere on OSMP land. No open flames, candles, or sparklers.
✓ No rice, confetti, birdseed, flower petals, or straw at the ceremony.
✓ Alcohol allowed with an additional $25 special use permit. No live bands or major amplification.
✓ Pack everything out and leave the facility clean. Standard OSMP rules apply.
Sunrise is one of the best larger-group ceremony spots in the Boulder area. The stone risers were built to seat real audiences, so even a 50-guest wedding feels comfortable and well-contained. The 100-person cap is a real cap shared across all the Flagstaff Summit facilities, so plan ahead if your list is getting close to it.
Just the two of you works here too, especially for a sunrise or sunset ceremony when the venue feels almost private. The risers in the background still give the photos a real wedding feel even with no guests.
The sweet spot for most Sunrise weddings. Enough people to fill out the stage area and front risers, intimate enough that everyone can interact, and easy parking situation at this size.
This is where Sunrise really earns its reputation. Stone risers handle the seating, the venue feels appropriately weighty for a real ceremony, and you can have a proper procession down to the stage.
100 people is the absolute ceiling, shared across all Flagstaff Summit facilities. Manageable, but at this size you'll want a shuttle service for guests since parking definitely will not accommodate everyone.
Sunrise Amphitheater has a lot of variables that other ceremony spots do not. Time of day, time of year, reservation timing, parking strategy. Here is what actually works.
Book your date 6+ months out
Summer Saturdays at Sunrise book out fast. The OSMP calendar opens 12 months ahead, and the best windows (mornings in summer, evenings in fall) go first. If you have your heart set on a specific date, do not wait. Saturday evenings in September are the single most competitive slots of the year.
Pick your light: sunrise or sunset
The amphitheater faces east, so sunrise here gives you alpenglow on the Flatirons and golden first light hitting the city below. Sunset turns the foothills behind you gold and lights up the city to the east. Both are great. Sunrise is quieter, sunset is more popular. Middle of the day is the worst time for photos and the busiest with tourists.
The 3-hour block is usually worth it
The 1-hour block sounds tempting at $150, but by the time guests arrive, you set up, do the ceremony, take family photos, and clear out, an hour is genuinely tight. The 3-hour block at $400 gives you breathing room and the ability to actually enjoy the venue without watching the clock.
