There is a moment right before you reach the overlook at Sapphire Point where the trees open up and the reservoir just appears below you. That moment gets couples every single time.
Five minutes from the parking lot and you are above Dillon Reservoir with the Tenmile Range in every direction. No hike to earn it, no 4WD to get there. Just one of the most beautifully accessible places in Summit County, waiting for you.

Sapphire Point is a spot I never get tired of showing people. Every single time I pull into that parking lot I am still kind of excited about what is five minutes away.
What makes it special is that it genuinely works for everyone. Couples eloping alone, couples bringing their whole family, couples with guests who have not been to altitude before. The walk is flat, the view is enormous, and nobody has ever stood at that overlook and been anything less than completely blown away.

April and May at Sapphire Point are a gamble. Some days are stunning. Other days the path is a muddy mess and the weather cannot make up its mind. If you pick Spring, go in with realistic expectations and a sense of adventure!
Sapphire Point in winter is a completely different place. Snow on the peaks, frost on the railing, the reservoir sitting still and quiet below you. Pack your warmest layers, expect some wind at the overlook. If snow is your thing, this spot is for you!
Fall at Sapphire Point is genuinely my favorite time to be there. September after Labor Day the crowds thin out, the aspens go gold, and the whole overlook feels quieter and more settled.
July and August are peak season at Sapphire Point and for good reason. The meadows are fully green, the days are warm, and the wildflowers are in full bloom! Just know that crowds follow the beauty.
Sapphire Point is one of the most accessible ceremony spots in all of Colorado. The parking lot sits right off Swan Mountain Road, about 10 minutes from downtown Breckenridge. From there it is a flat, well-maintained gravel path to the overlook. Any vehicle, any fitness level, any attire.

Large free lot directly off Swan Mountain Road. Any vehicle, no 4WD required.
About 5 minutes on a flat wide gravel path. Suitable for all fitness levels and ages.
One of the few truly spectacular alpine spots that works for guests with mobility considerations.
10 minutes south on Hwy 9 and Swan Mountain Road. See the Google Map here.
Sapphire Point does require a reservation through Recreation.gov, and there are some specific rules worth knowing before you book. Here is the honest breakdown so nothing catches you off guard.
You book your event slot through Recreation.gov in three hour blocks. Available windows are 6am to 9am, 10am to 1pm, 2pm to 5pm, and 6pm to 9pm. I almost always recommend the 6am slot if you can swing it.
Note: a non-refundable reservation fee is charged in addition to the use fee when you book through Recreation.gov. Reserve on recreation.gov
After June 14, 2026 all event reservations move to the new north overlook site rather than the west overlook with the rock wall. Worth knowing if you are planning around a specific look.

✓ Non-exclusive site. Your reservation does not give you the overlook to yourselves. The trail and all overlooks stay open to the public the entire time.
✓ Maximum 30 people. Maximum 2 dedicated parking spaces. Shuttle guests if your group needs more than two cars.
✓ No confetti, flower petals, rice, seeds, or anything you throw or release. No food or drinks. No chairs. No stakes or poles in the ground. No open flames.
✓ Decorations must be free-standing, natural, and removed immediately after the ceremony.
✓ Acoustic music only. No amplification. Must not be heard from more than 150 feet away.
✓ In winter the trail is not maintained. Dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear.
✓ Print or display your Recreation.gov confirmation on site. It also needs to be on the dashboard of both reserved parking vehicles.
✓ Commercial photography permits are separate from the event reservation. I handle my own so you do not need to worry about that side of things.
With a maximum of 30 people allowed at Sapphire Point (your photographer and/or videographer counts toward that number), you have real room to bring your people. The overlook is spacious enough to handle a group that size comfortably, guests can be bused in from Breckenridge or Frisco, and you and your photographer each get a dedicated parking spot at the overlook.
This spot can get busy in peak season but timing makes all the difference. Here is what actually works.
Arrive at sunrise
Sapphire Point is empty before 8am almost every day of the year. The morning light on the reservoir is honestly one of the most beautiful things I have ever photographed. This is the single best thing you can do.
Elope on a weekday
Summer weekends get genuinely crowded by mid-morning. Tuesday through Thursday are dramatically quieter even in peak season, a completely different and much more private experience.
September is the secret weapon
Most couples book summer because that is what shows up in searches. But September after Labor Day is quieter, golden, and genuinely my favorite time to photograph this spot. The light and the aspens together are something else.
